General Travel Tips Hong Kong

  • SIM cards: You can buy a local SIM card for Hong Kong in convenience stores, at the airport or in the shop of telecommunication providers. Please note that if you already have a SIM card from mainland China, this SIM card will not work in Hong Kong unless you buy an additional package for Hong Kong. This data package for Hong Kong must be bought in mainland China, before you arrive to Hong Kong. Otherwise your SIM card from mainland China will not work in Hong Kong.
  • Payment systems: Payments via Alipay and WeChat Pay (mainland Chinese apps) will not work in Hong Kong. You will need the Hong Kong version of Alipay, or you can pay in cash or with credit card almost anywhere in Hong Kong. In mainland China, paying with credit card and cash is difficult. So if you go to mainland China, we recommend that you install Alipay or WeChat Pay on your phone. Those apps are very commonly used in mainland China for payments and can be linked to your credit card. Please note that for taxis in Hong Kong you will need cash in Hong Kong dollars. Very few taxis accept credit card payments.

Travel tips Hong Kong for cruise passengers

There are two ports for cruise ships in Hong Kong: the Ocean Terminal and the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. The Ocean Terminal is centrally located in Tsim Sha Tsui and is well-connected to public transportation. The Kai Tak Cruise Terminal is outside the city and can only be reached by taxi. Please clarify in advance which terminal your ship will be docking at and let us know. If you dock at the Kai Tak Terminal, please do not start the tour there, as this meeting point is unsuitable. Instead, we recommend the following meeting point:
Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower (Tsim Sha Tsui)
Google Maps Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/o32ivyEMzHvBbuPc7

Why this meeting point?
1. Cost saving: From Kai Tak Terminal our guides need to use a taxi (costs approx. 120 HKD).
2. Time saving: The ride to the centre takes about 20 minutes – you can use this time better for the tour.

How to get to the meeting point? (Former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower)

  • Take a taxi at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal or order one via Uber.
  • Taxi capacity: normal taxis 4 passengers (rarely 5), on Uber taxis with up to 6 passengers are bookable (depending on vehicle type in the app)
  • Cost for taxi ride: approx. 120 HKD (only cash payment in HKD possible / Uber: payment by credit card possible)

Important notes on payment

  • Taxis only accept cash in Hong Kong dollars (HKD)
  • For public transportation (subway, buses) you also need cash.
  • If you do not have HKD, you can exchange money at bureaux de change or withdraw it from the HSBC ATM in the Star Ferry Terminal (next to the Clock Tower, Google Maps Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/8efwfsKkxDWDxuSUA). Tip: Inform the cab driver that you need to withdraw money on arrival and ask him to wait for a short time.

Travel tips Hong Kong for passengers arriving via Hong Kong International Airport

Please do not select the airport as meeting point for a tour. It will take our guides around 1 hour to reach the airport. The airport is located too far from the city centre where the attractions are. We therefore recommend that you take the airport express train to get to the city center by yourselves and meet your guide at the Hong Kong station. Hong Kong station is the final station of the airport express train coming from the airport. The journey time on the airport express time to Hong Kong station is 24 minutes and the cost of the ticket is 115 HKD for adults. Inside Hong Kong station, there is Wi-Fi so you can reach your guide on WhatsApp.
