VIETNAMESE RESTAURANTS

Tầm vị
https://maps.app.goo.gl/5xA3vdwt2xcPtZtr5
This vintage tea house feels distinctly North Vietnamese with its nostalgic collection of Chinese furniture, hand-written signs and an antique gramophone and telephone. They serve Northern Vietnamese dishes with some central and southern options. The Vietnamese ham with periwinkle chả ốc (snails) comes with fresh herbs, vegetables and rice vermicelli with fish sauce. The subtle crab soup with canh cua mừng tơi (malabar spinach) comes in a clear broth.

A Bản – Mountain Dew
https://maps.app.goo.gl/KfuhZVSPZJRp1USU7
The lush garden complete with water features and a dining room decked out in colourful fabric are inspired by the nature and culture of northwestern Vietnam, Chef Phạm Việt’s birthplace. In the same vein, authentic Mông, Tày, Muong and Tai cuisine from the region dominates the menu resulting in a fascinating ethnic mix hard to find elsewhere. Rare ingredients such as snake, horse, buffalo and carp add to the exotic and eclectic experience.

The restaurant decor draws inspiration from the Temple of Literature just across the road. Their 12-course set menu changes with the seasons and is informed by Vietnamese culinary heritage. Deceptively complex, the beautifully crafted dishes showcase well-judged combinations of subtle flavours, with acidity and texture playing prominent roles.

His tasting menu, which keeps pace with the seasons and uses local produce, boasts colourful, minimalist dishes, each of which features just 3 or 4 ingredients, whose complexity explodes with every bite. Hanoi Bars

Lighthouse Sky Bar
https://maps.app.goo.gl/yYRN1wAHxm2TvTJB6
High Above the Old Quarter, enjoy some of the best views of Hanoi. This ambitiously structured bar (unique to Hanoi and Vietnam for that matter) is styled on a boat which creatively plays to the meaning of Hang Be street. The bar is ‘moored’ over three levels of terrace space (Rooftop floors); its bow with the bar area overlooks the street while at the back the stern faces the Red River.

The Haflington
https://maps.app.goo.gl/DDE8wNYz1p2J2oAw7
Down a nondescript alley, and up a short flight of stairs, The Haflington is all period opulence in what appears to be a homage to London’s Natural History Museum – there’s a stuffed peacock as you enter and a fossilized dinosaur hanging above the bar in the attic. And the perfectly balanced drinks don’t stray far from the classics, as you’d expect from The Haflington’s dapper, old-school attired bartenders. No wonder it won the design award at the inaugural B.A.R. Awards in 2023. Be sure to book.

The Alchemist – Cocktail Bar
https://maps.app.goo.gl/LBPxazuSZbLm1yPy5
Dark wooden shelves laden with antique bottles, mysterious vials, and illuminated manuscripts set the stage at this cocktail bar. Drawing inspiration from alchemical traditions, each drink is crafted with a blend of age-old techniques and modern mixology. Local ingredients, some with healing and mystical properties in Vietnamese folklore, meld seamlessly with premium spirits from around the world.

3Pias Clubhouse
https://maps.app.goo.gl/XSB7XtrkEPqSShdn9
At 3PIAS Clubhouse the name references the piaster, the currency of French Indochina. This part of town used to be commercial street and home to a large Chinese community, and 3PIAS Clubhouse aims to revive the community and connection through wines and cocktails. It all feels like an opium dream, with DJs and a smoke-breathing dragon. And the house cocktails are as full of surprises as stepping through the entrance, with a Guava Smash that includes Song Cai Floral Gin and blue cheese, and their Tiny Flowers with gin, sakura vermouth and sandalwood.

Nê Boong-ke
https://maps.app.goo.gl/3MZGFP14euFSoy8Y6

Beeznees 1920s
https://maps.app.goo.gl/wFVFhDmyurhDwtNm9
With anyone with a bar and a bartender proclaiming themselves a speakeasy, Bee’Znees at least did justice to the name with its entrance hidden behind a bookcase, and the illicit vibes emanating from inside. And that was the concept created by the Bee’Znees team, to be part artsy cocktail bar and part time traveling machine, whisking guests back to the 1920s when rough-edged bathtub gin was sweetened with honey and the Bees Knees cocktail was born.

The Black Sheep – Cocktail Theatre

A list of places to drink in Hanoi wouldn’t be complete without Polite & Co. – the original Hanoi ‘speakeasy.’ Inside this gentleman’s club-inspired cocktail bar, there is the atmosphere of a pub, especially as the evening wears on only the cocktails are far better than your average boozer.

The Old Well Cocktail Bar
https://maps.app.goo.gl/T4oMK4HFzeD5R4Dc9
Old Well Cocktail Bar, formerly known as I&I Cocktail Castle is 15 meters down a magical alley, which gave Pham Tien Tiep and team the idea to create a Hanoi cocktail bar as a fairytale castle. There’s even an old well to sit beside as you sip a cocktail and stare up at the stars through the glass roof and imagine what part you play in this fairytale and how it’s going to end.

Tadioto
https://maps.app.goo.gl/fdKN2mH3MFVijDzo8
At Tadioto, Dalat-born former radio broadcaster and writer, and Hanoi’s artsy icon and intellectual Nguyen Qui Duc, who sadly passed away recently, succinctly distilled the capital’s poetic energy into a space for “thinkers and drinkers” since 2007. That simple claim understates the charm of Tadioto and its ahead-of-its-time design. The name means “let’s take the car” but whichever way you get there, make sure you get to this hip halfway house for an evening out.

21Gam
https://maps.app.goo.gl/RUUzGA2sFRo3hGHw9
21 GAM is the place to go in Hanoi when you’ve got no place to go. But, although 21 GAM is often the last raucous stop of the night, it’s a soul-enriching experience any time of the evening – the neon on the wall even says so, ‘follow your soul’ it says, ‘it knows the way.’ The decor adds to the positive energy of the place, roof tiles, exposed brickwork and a long, inviting bar in the middle.

USE bar
https://maps.app.goo.gl/dJjEWgVFVr5AtaK67
At the creatively adventurous USEbar, the concept centers around sustainability. There’s a space with lounge chairs that appear to have been designed by Jeff Koons. And there’s a counter-bar with a suspended tree branch above it. And the bartending team employs the kinds of ingredients that usually get thrown away, jackfruit fibers and coconut shells.

Located at the cultural Event space COMPLEX 01, this bar is an excellent place for live music. Polygon Musik hosts concerts for a wide range of genres. Super local place where you won’t find any tourists.

Cafe Giảng
https://maps.app.goo.gl/6KHEdDxVaVD79opJ6
The “Café Giảng” is one of the most famous traditional coffee shops in Hanoi, located on the east side of the Old Quarter. Opened since 1946, the café was named after its founder – Mr. Nguyễn Giảng – a bartender at a colonial hotel in the French Quarter. Tucked away behind a small lane, through what looks like someone’s house and could be easily missed, on the bustle of Nguyen Huu Huan Street. This hidden gem draws endless lines of locals and tourists to taste the original “cà phê trứng”, or egg coffee.

This is without a doubt one of the cutest cafes in Hanoi. Located by Hoan Kiem Lake, The Note Coffee is a popular coffeehouse with colorful Post-it notes covering every square inch of the cafe. It’s recommended in virtually every “cafes to visit” list in Hanoi.

Tách Spaces
https://maps.app.goo.gl/cUxTLWctgLRSww9w5
Tach Spaces seems to morph and grow with each visit. There’s a vibrant social cafe space in the center. Next to that now is a grill restaurant. And upstairs, it’s party time with a compact indoor club, with a revolving roster of the country’s favorite underground DJs, and a large terrace outside. And it’s reassuring to see Hanoi stick to its creative inclinations with an artsy venue like Tach Spaces right on downtown Hai Ba Trung.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/CozVXd8CUeVtQeTR9
When it comes to creative, high-quality coffee drinks, Sonder Coffee Bar may win for the best coffee shop in Hanoi. Sonder means “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.” You can tell by the name alone that they put a lot of thought into this coffee shop. And that shows in the coffee as well! Here you can try some interesting crafted drinks, like whiskey barrel aged cold brew, a fluffee, and a pho macchiato! What is a pho macchiato? Well, we aren’t 100% sure. It is espresso, milk, and secret ingredients.

Habakuk Fine Coffee & Bistro
https://maps.app.goo.gl/BC9xvu4jB1kw4Xrd7
Tucked away in a narrow side street, Habakuk doesn’t stand out, so keep a lookout for the blue back-lit signs. By day it’s a speciality coffeeshop serving single-origin coffee and a small brunch menu. In the evening it morphs into a modern bistro. The concise dinner menu is modern European with distinct Mediterranean accents. The cooking is confident, neatly presented and steeped in well-judged flavours; the service is warm and helpful.
